seals each attached to strips passing through two slits each. The strips for two survive and the one in the centre of the bottom of the deed still bears the seal of the nunnery. Red wax, 7 cm. long vesica shaped. The edges are chipped, the original width being perhaps 5.3 cm. An enthroned virgin, the child between her knees, both haloed, in her hand a fleur-de-lys inclined towards the 'head, upon a stem emanating from an orb. The child grasps a staff with a cross at the top in the dexter hand. The sinister arm, bent towards the elbow, holds what appears to be a book resting on the knee. There is a counter seal 4.4 x 4.6 cm. A virgin and child in a cusped vesicas, the lower portion obscured by a circular compartment containing a demi-figure robed and veiled, apparently kneeling, the head facing the dexter and hands clasped in prayer.
The large seal bears the legend on the dexter side, MARIE CLERICORUM, the other side being badly chipped iway. The counter-seal bears the legend
PRIORISSE DE CLERKENWELL' op (The same conventual seal occurs as early as Ermengarde at St. Bartholomew's hospital and as late as 9 Henry VI; P.R.O., Ancient Deed B. 7983. For examples : in green wax, see deeds of prioress Alice (at St. Bartholomew's hospital) and of prioress Hawis (no. 34ô): in white wax, deed of prioress Cecilia (St. Paul's A. Box 15,178) : and red wax in 1275 (above) and in 1377 (Harl. chart. 53. H. 15). See Brit. Mus., Cat. of Seals, i. 512, and illustrations in Pinks, History of Clerhenwell, p. 31, and Storer and Cromwell, History of Clerhenwell, p. 31. The counter-seal is found on prioress Alice's deed.) |
