Whereas three years ago tho king caused proclamation to be made
St. Edmunds, throughout the realm that no merchant or other should bring from parts beyond the seas, sell or traffic with any cloths not of the right measure according to the assize, to wit, 26 ells in length by 6 quarters in breadth, except says (assails) for which no certain measure is yet ordained in the realm; the king has given power to Poncius de
Mora, Richard de Ewell and William de Arundel to arrest all cloths
from beyond seas, measure (ulnandi) them and take into the king's
hand those found defective in length and breadth whether in the
hands of denizens or aliens; with mandate to the stewards, keepers
and bailiffs of St. Giles's fair, Winchester, all merchants coming to the
fairs, and all others, to be intendant to them, giving them counsel
and help when required. |
