Grant by Thomas de nevill the clerk to the canons in free alms of the houses in Lothbury on Walbrook which were once held by Aaron the jew of Lincoln, with adjacent vacant land once held by Brunus the Jew, in the parish of St Olaf Jewry in London which had been granted to him by King John, rendering a pair of gilt spurs to the king at Easter and the service due to the lords of the fee, as in the king's charter (no.570) which Thomas has handed to Abbot Richard. Date: after no.570, dated 1 February 1214, at which date Serb the mercer was mayor and remained so in 1215; he was mayor again from 1217 to 1222 (Brooke and Keir, London 800-1216, 376). Before no.571. For the career of Thomas de Nevill, see Fasti: Lincoln 1066-1300, 84; he had been custos of the Jews in the 1190s and in 1205 was granted the royal manor of Writtle for life (PR 7 John, 9, 172, 175, 195). Note: the rent was payable at the Exchequer at Westminster; the chief lords were the monks of Westminster to whom the canons paid Ss a year (no.573 <18>). The rent of spurs is noted in 1230 (PR 14 Henry III, 101), but in 1232 Abbot Henry was to demise the property to Benedict Crespin the Jew (Cal. Charter Rolls, i, 168).
