1198. Charter indented of the lord Alan Abbot of the monastery of Chertsey and the Convent of the same place granted to Geoffrey Wynton pepperer of London concerning a tenement situated in the parish of St. Benedict upon Thames formerly of Adam Wh,iteby Rendering therefor yearly to the monastery aforesaid zos. for ever Saving to the Chapter of St. Paul London the due services which pertain to the same Chapter Which tenement is now the western part of the hospice of the lord Duke of Gloucester. pertaining to us Saving however to the Chapter of St. Paul London [hfeoa.dcecdc lxxj what of the same tenement pertains to the said Chapter For London] this grant Geoffrey has given us loos. sterling. He has granted also for himself and his heirs that if they shall not pay the aforesaid rent at the terms aforenamed the messengers of the Abbot and Convent shall be upon the cost (costum) of Geoffrey and his heirs at every term until it shall be fully satisfied them of the rent. Geoffrey has sworn in our Chapter and his heirs succeeding him in turn will similarly swear that they will faithfully pay the aforesaid rent at the appointed terms nor will they seek any art or trickery (ingenium) by which we may be defrauded of our rent. Nor will it be lawful for Geoffrey or his heirs to grant the said tenement without our licence to a religious house or a Jew.
